Yes, lack of compassion, caring, all around just plain inhumanity towards one another. Not great people just people who care. Those are disappearing fast. Then who-ever should be left, is doomed.

Almost all scholars in many different fields now agree that the Great Man theory is incomplete at the very best, and most say it is basically complete nonsense.
Even putting that aside though, let's explore your apparanent assumption that people are "born to be great", and so therefore, the more people who are born, the more great ones will show up. Early experience, education, etc. actually has more to do with what special things we might accomplish then talents we are born with. So, the more social development improves in the right way, the more "great people" there might be, theoretically at least.
Some might argue that "Great Men" are actually born, but that is far from proven. But even if Greatness is completely a product of birth, Greatness is also relative. If there are less people, and even if as a whole those people were "less great" than before, there is still likely to be a few people who are better then most, and they could become Great Men.
