3 1 - 1 2 3 3 In 3 1 , multiply the whole number, ' 3 ', by the denominator of the fraction, ' 3 ' to get ' 9 '. This shows that the whole number represents 9 . 3 3 To find the numerator when this mixed number is shown as an improper fraction, use addition. 9 + 1 = 10 3 3 3 In 1 2 , multiply the whole number, ' 1 ', by the denominator of the fraction, ' 3 ' to get ' 3 '. This shows that the whole number represents 3 . 3 3 To find the numerator when this mixed number is shown as an improper fraction, use addition. 3 + 2 = 5 3 3 3 The addition is now simpler because the whole numbers have been eliminated, leaving only two fractions.10 - 5 3 3 Subtract the numerators.5 3 Divide the numerator, '5' by the denominator, '3', to get 1 with remainder 2. The remainder is the new numerator. The quotient, '1', becomes the whole number in the mixed number.1 2/3
The resulting mixed number is:
1 2/3

well, since they have the same fraction dinominator we can just add them like this but its easier if you turn it in to an improper fraction:
3 1/3 so into improper we do 3x3=9 then 9+1=10 so the
improper fraction is 10/3
( always the same dinominator)
now turn the other one into improper: 1 2/3 so improper
fraction is 3x1=3 then 3+2=5 so improper is 5/3
now we subtract them:
10/3 - 5/3 =
5/3=
1 2/3
