He's a mediocre American painter of rather commercial and bland illustrations of cottages, landscapes and scenery. He is not particularly creative artistically (his "art" looks more like greeting cards and cheap calendars) but he is a master of marketing and mass distribution and has convinced huge numbers of people that his works are valuable. He has chains of stores that sell overpriced reproductions and has licensed his images for everything from keychains to wallpaper to lampshades. He has become a millionaire selling tasteless junk to people who don't know any better. He is not taken seriously by any museums, galleries or students of art or anyone with a good eye and sense of aesthetics.
I suppose I sound like I'm being an elitist snob but I know that there are thousands of talented and sincere artists in the world who struggle to survive with few people knowing of their work. Several of my family members are professional artists whose creations far surpass any of Kinkades. It bothers me that so many folks waste their money on Kinkade's hackneyed stuff instead of truly beautiful and moving works of genuine art of lasting beauty which they could buy at reasonable prices from unsung artists in their own communities or almost anywhere in the world. Those would be works of lasting value -- Kinkade's stuff is trash now and will be worthless in the future, destined for landfills, not the archives of artistic history.
Saying "Kinkade is America's most collected artist" is like saying "Coca Cola is America's finest wine."

Thomas Kinkade is called a "painter of light". He paints street scenes, cottages, etc. and all seem to have lights that glow as real lights do. He is America's most collected artist.

He is called "The painter of light" Because the light in his paintings looks so realistic. Problem is, he let "fame" go to his head and is now trying to cash-in selling many, many other things than paintings but all have his scenes of "light". I have seen calendars, collectible figurines, post cards, you name it, he's collecting on it. I would not be surprised to see screen-print t-shirts, bedspreads and flip-flops. His name only became known in the last 4-5 years. I guess the saying is right: make hay while the sun shines. He's good, though.

he's a painter, still working...known as the "painter of light" for his ability to have an almost glow about his work...he is neither particularly gifted or original...he is extremely commercialized--his images are on everything from key chains to calendars to coffee mugs--an artist for the trailer park set, in truth...

Wow, as much as his paintings are pushed in the US I thought that his work is everywhere. Try looking for some of his stuff on sale on e-bay to actually see a picture of his stuff. His work is beautiful and you see it alot in Christian Store here in the US. To each their own on rather or not it is in your taste or not.
