Am I mistaken or is Melissa Etheridge planning to play Janis Joplin in a new film?

The rumors keep circulating! The link below says yes, in one year, but check date: 1996. Her battle with cancer has changed her scheduling and maybe opted her out of some projects?

The Rose, Joplin played by Bette Midler, although better than nothing, was too sugary for my taste.

There is nothing on imdb confirming that or that there is even a movie about Joplin planned in the next few years. IF there were a movie made, Etheridge is too old to play the part. Joplin died when she was 27 and although Etheridge has the gritty voice, she wouldn't be able to pull off 27.
