The Bridge at Remagen
The Dirty Dozen
The Great Escape
They are all fantastic films from the allied perspective - the best German representations are:
Das Boot (The Boat)
Stalingrad
which are more modern and gritty.

Apart from saving private Ryan? , that doesn't even come into the reckoning. Look at a film made nearer the time.
Das Boot, A Bridge Too Far, 633 Squadron, etc. The Americans, while effective, always come in too late.

Downfall was good a German film about Hitlers last days but most war films are poor and unrealistic. I would say if you liked Ryan Band of brothers the series will appeal to you.I also like Apocalypse now and Jarhead for showing how pointless was often is

In no particular order
Bridge on the River Kwai
Band of Brothers
They were Expendable
The Thin Red Line (the original, not the remake)
Attack! (Jack Palance is great in this movie)
Big Red One
Battleground
Hope this helps!

Das Boot has got to be one of the most realistic WW2 films. Set on a German U boat. Watch out it is 3.5 hours long.

I'd say Das Boot, but The Bridge on the River Kwai is also excellent.
