over the next 400 years, 12 million african slaves arrived to work on new owrld plantations. It is estimated that 48 million young and able bodied people were captured and the rest died on the way. What effect might this have on africas development?

Parts of Africa and a number of African tribes profited in the slave trade and had the slave trade with the new world not have happened then this wealth would not have been exchanged.

The conversion of african religion to Islam might have been slowed considering that the Arabs were the largest slave traders and often sought out non-Muslim for slaves.

Since most of the fortunes made in the slave trade was squandered anyway I do not see any difference.

Wow, what an insightful question. I think you already have your answer when you look at current day Africa and how most of it has become known as a Third World.

But one thing I want to point is Columbus was not the one to start the practice of slavery. That practice had been implemented many many years before European settlement in North America. I think that if you want to get a full impact of development in Africa and what restrictions slavery caused then you need to include statistics from India, England...in fact all of Europe and the Middle East and even include that slave trade practices that took place within Africa.

Slavery in any form was and is a bad institution, but it was used by every conquering nation from The beginning of time, mostly for menial labor. None of my distant relations had or owned slaves, but some were sent to The Virginia colonies as what was known then as bond slaves in the early 18th century. They were known as debtors and sent off to repay their debts. Hopefully we in the modern world can learn from the mistakes our forfathers made and not repeat them.

What about the white slaves that came to the new world? Why do you blacks always forget about them? There were millions of white slaves that had to pay off their debts before they were freed, just like the black people. (They had to pay their way here.) The blacks that were hard workers were freed alot sooner than the troublemakers. You should also note that many times when a black slave was freed he chose to stay working for the same master of his own free will.
