Mothers day in this country originated apparently when people who many years ago worked in service for well to do families,they worked six and a half days per week and only got one full day a year off,this day is when they could go back to their family home for the day,so someone came up with the idea of calling this day mothering sunday.

not sure exactly, but in uk it was the one day a year children who worked in service to the high classes got to go home to see their mothers.
must have started around victiorian times.
