remedial in dictionary.com means "intended to correct or improve one's skill in a specified field: remedial math" therefore, if you are taking a remedial english class, it is meant to improve it.
Since the No Child Left Behind Act has taken place in california, most students who did not pass their CAHSEE in math, or english have to take remedial classes to make up for it.

Remedial classes are also known by many different names such as intensive classes or some cutesy name like STAR or whatever--got to keep the kids guessing.
Basically, remedial classes are for those students who do not perform well on their state's standardize test--those that count toward No Child Left Behind (NCLB).
ALL U.S. states comply with the NCLB act; thus, all public schools, will have some kind of remedial classes--math and reading are most common; yet, some schools may have writing and science as well.
Good Luck....

generally it refers to lessons that are designed to take the student back a few steps (or a lot) from where they should be in order to fill in any gaps in their learning or help them learn and practice skills they may not have acquired
