I own a small business. We've never paid a cent for advertising in any form. We serve delicious meals at a fair price. If we were busier, we'd outgrow our present location, but don't want to.

Why do businesses pay for attention?

If their product or service is superior and well worth the cost...they will succeed, no?

Why pay to brag. Just do it.

Word of mouth is always the best form of advertising, and congratulations on making that work for you without having to pay for other forms of advertising.

But a lot of businesses advertise (like your competitors) advertise because they want people to stop eating at your place and try theirs once in a while. And once they get enough people into their business through advertising, word of mouth will become a resource for them too.

Advertising works at getting more customers through your door and growing a business, there's no doubt about it, but some businesses are happy with staying small and not growing so they choose not to advertise. That's fine too.

As the world gets more popular people tend to have a desire to try different hings so they get competitors, so they advertise to just keep there current customers satisfied that they are still willing to do the good work they do and spend some money to prove it. You sound like you are just a very professional, successful person and don't need to advertise, like my mechanic his business is all by word of mouth by people recommending him and he is overwhelmed with work! Congratulations on your success.....my best friend and her husband on the other hand who own there very successful business do advertise as they are in a very competitive work environment and they must go to several conventions so they actually do it to keep there customers reassured that they are there for them and will do there job as they say they will and they never went to school for any business classes or financial classes or anything just 2 lovers that are determined to make it work. Good Luck!

Most businesses have to satisfy their shareholders demand for profits/dividends. With costs constantly increasing (labor, rents, utilities, transportation, etc.), businesses must therefore plan to continually grow to meet these needs. To do this they must continually attract new customers, as old ones switch to other suppliers, or cease to require their product or service, or simply die off. Bragging or word of mouth is simply not enough to sustain this required growth. Hence the need to market/advertise.

I agree with you on that. Word of mouth is a powerful tool; a good product or service at a good price. I my self have an online small online business, but my friends put their two cents in and tell me to expand. I tell them that I don't want to grow so big that I don't know the names of my employees.

For many businesses, word of mouth is simply not effective. If, for example, you're a manufacturer in China and you are looking for US wholesalers, you will need to do more than word of mouth. And, word of mouth will usually only allow you to get to a certain business size.

If you're a local business and don't want to be gigantic, word of mouth is effective and inexpensive.
