The real problem is that the contractions are so painful for her, which they shouldn't be. If they weren't painful then she would have an easier time of it.

She should make sure that her body is in good shape, well nourished, well hydrated, well resterd. She should relax. Stress causes the uterus to not get as much oxygen, and as you know when you work out hard and your muscles do not get enough oxygen that is when you feel the burn. That is what happens to your uterus when you are under too much stress. Keeping the mouth relaxed and breathing/moaning low and loose really helps.

I am hesitant to suggest any remedies because they all cause contractions but nothing can cause full labour until the baby is ready. And more contractions at this point are just going to make her miserable.

Also remember that she doesn't need to go to the hospital until she is contracting ever 5 minutes or less.

The next time she calls you go over there and encourage her to drink a large glass of water, take a warm bath or shower (if this relaxes her) and lie down on her side in bed in a darkish room while you rub her back and feet. Encourage her to relax and not fight the contractions. This will help either to stop the contractions or to let her go into real labour.

Another really important thing is that she be ready for the baby to come. Mentally. Ask her if she has any concerns. Maybe you can help her clean and organize. Etc. Really my relatives scubbed my house and then I was finally almost ready and I went into labour. I know it sounds cliche but really your body won't go into labour if your mind tells it not to. Animals will stop labour if they are stressed.

If possible also get her to see a chiropractor trained in prenatal care. This will help align her back and pelvis which may help with the immediate pressure and ensure the baby is in the optimal position for birth. Labour could be stopping because the baby is in a bad position. Or the contractions could be to push the baby back into the right position when it moves. http://www.icpa4kids.org

Remember first babies are often late.

Good luck

Tell your niece that if she squats leaning slightly over her belly until the pressure builds and then pushes down when she feels the urge this will put pressure on her cervix and help her dilate so that she's in active labor. Best of luck.

Try walking frequently, vigoriously, not run. Also she could take a ride on a bumpy road sometimes the movement will start contractions.

Sex, there is something in the sperm that can start off labour in the end of pregnancy. This worked for my sister. A good walk, spicy curry or a gin/vodka and tonic. Good luck!

What work for me was walking and sex. Take her to the mall and make her walk the whole mall.

Having an orgasm can help to jump-start labor. Sometimes it is hard to have an orgasm when you are that physically uncomfortable though...

WALKING!!! there's nothing like gravity.

moving some furniture...even sex.
