This is the very first time I'm taking a take-home midterm exam for school. Is it the same as a regular Scantron exam (no books, no notes)?

It depends on your professor, but usually a take-home exam is open-book, open-notes. If not, you could just take it in class. You need to be careful about collaboration, though: for a take-home exam your are almost always on the honor system to do your own work and not discuss the questions with others (even the helpful folks on Yahoo! Answers). An exception would be a group project.

Your professor will most likely give specific directions on this when the test is handed out. If not, you should ask.

If you're tempted to cheat, remember that your professor has the same access to the internet that you do, and may actually have some anti-cheating software that detects answers downloaded from other sources.

Good luck!

Probably not, since there would be no way to enforce that rule. My guess it will be a more comprehensive type of exam which will require some research into the books and more definitive answers with explanations in an essay format.

Most of my take home exams were open book/open notes. Don't ask the teacher. In this case what you don't know CAN hurt you. Use your books and notes. The teacher will never know if you don't tell on yourself!

It must be open books and notes, because there is no way to enforce it. Because of that, the test will be harder and might even be open ended questions instead of a Scantron.

As for whether you can work with other students on it, you need to ask your professor. Sometimes they allow it, and sometimes they don't. If they don't then don't even risk it because if they catch you then you could be punished for cheating.

Entirely depends on your teacher. Maybe you should ask.
