When the repair man came he found nothing wrong with it even though it got hot enough and smoked we had to shut off breaker to it. We ran it again and only 1 time did it smell hot. The washer is only about 2 years old. We have taken it apart and can find nothing at all. Has this happened to anyone else?

No but I took a hot shower when we first moved into our new place and when I opened the door the steam set off the alarm which is insanely loud....I had to move the alarm because it kept doing that.

It seems you have a;ready done more than the repairman with regards to your own safety...congratulations...!

If your washer has emitted enough smoke to set off a smoke alarm then ask yourself what is under a washer that could burn enough to create so much smoke.

If there is no foreign debris under the washer where the drive mechanism is then the only answer can be the DRIVE BELT(S) is / are burning.

Some washers use a spring loaded idler pulley to reduce belt slippage during start up and during cycle change while some do not. In either situation, the belt is too loose for the washer load you have in the machine.

If your machine utilizes an idler pulley it is possible the tension spring has grown weak altho doubtful to believe considering it is just two years old. It may even have an adjustment location hole for the spring so as to increase belt tension.

If your machine does not utilize an idler pulley then it is obvious the belt has stretched from being too tight or that your washer loads have been too heavy a load for the belt at start up and cycle changing. Stretching of the belt will cause slippage and the belt will burn.

Now that the belt has already burnt to some degree, it must be replaced or else the danger of fire will increase as now the slippage is constant.

Meanwhile, use less of a load when doing the wash and also communicate with the customer service department of the washer maufacturer as chances of a store sales person knowing factory specifications are not in your favour...

As all washer tubs literally "float" inside the washer housing you must be certain your washer is perfectly level in both directions or the wash load will thrust the weight balance beyond its ability to function according to manufacturers specifications.

Did he check the belts? Only things I can think of in washer that would cause that are belts and motor. He surely would have found a motor problem. Plus you would know motor is giving trouble.
Also check to see if there is anything with the dryer if it is near the washer and was running about the same time.

belts may be slipping but the motor has to get air to keep it cool. Move it a couple inches more away from the wall and if that doesn't work and its in a small room put a fan on top sucking the air out that will bring cool air in from the floor

Check the running condition with and then without a load. Sounds like a slipping belt or motor overload under a load(only).

I would suggest calling another reparir man and get your money back from teh other one. The guy who came probably didn't knwo what he was doing. If something like that is happening, you never know what will happen in the future if it doesn't get fixed. Good Luck
