if you did not have the name or formula, you do an experiment

determine the mass of some CuSO4*5H2O on a balance

gently heat the hydrate, cool and weigh
repeat this process until you get a constant weight
this means that all the water has been removed and you now have the anyhdrous compound CUSO4

by subtracting the two masses, you will get the mass of water removed by heating

take the mass of the water, divide by the mass of the original hydrated compound (CuSO4*5H2O) and multiply by 100%

I just took chemistry, and I am so incredibly glad I don't have to deal with problems like this anymore. Just seeing this problem made me cringe. Good luck with solving this, because I already cleaned my head of everything chemistry...sorry...
