Special sauce is the sauce used in the McDonald's Big Mac hamburger
it is essentially composed of mayonnaise, relish, ketchup and mustard
The sauce differs from Thousand Island dressing, contrary to popular belief. The Big Mac sauce is thicker at room temperature than almost all salad dressings, and even more so when refrigerated. The degree of sweetness may also be a significant difference, depending on the specific thousand-island dressing being compared.

BIG MAC COPYCAT SAUCE RECIPE
Here is the single deck version we prepare regularly in our test Kitchen
when we have our Big Mac Attacks and can't make it to McDonald's
1 heaping teaspoon sour cream
Small pinch of cayenne pepper
Pinch of garlic powder
Pinch salt
1/4 teaspoon sugar
Pinch mustard powder
2-3 heaping tablespoon Kroger brand Real Mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Vlasic brand DILL relish.
Mix prepared sauce in with 3/4 cup shredded lettuce and
1/4 cup shredded green cabbage, add a cooked beef patty and 1 slice Kraft American cheese to each burger on a Sesame seed bun.
Makes enough sauce for 4 burgers

It's basically thousand island dressing with a few tweaks to make it "special". Burger places often have a "secret" sauce. There's a place in Seattle where the place uses a type of tartar sauce which you would normally see on fried fish in New England.
