No offense, but this question shows you know very little about planting and germinating seeds! There is NO "generic" time period for sprouting a seed; they are extremely varied!! Some seeds sprout in as little as 2 to 4 days, while others can take up to a MONTH! Without us knowing what type of plant you're trying to grow (i.e. where the seed came from), we can't give you any useful help. Well, aside from saying good luck, which I'll say now. :)

Seeds should have light. They have found seeds inside ancient tombs in Egypt, and when planted they have sprouted.

Whatcha growing? Every kind of seed has its own requirements on soil depth, temperature and light. If it doesn't sprout in a week, it probably won't.
