It means that most people just believe what they have been told to believe, so they have no logic train to back up what they think that they believe.
People who have rigorously challenged what they believe and kept only what survived this challenge have a logical context with which they can defend their beliefs.

the people in the first part had to work for their faith so they are more likely to keep it and are therefore blessed - the people in the second part were just given their faith so they will be easily decieved and less likely to stay in the faith

i think it means this:
learning the hard way, by experience makes you more capable of dealing with what life throws in your path.
someone who works hard for their money, knows the value of a dollar and what they sacrificed to earn it. people who live on handouts don't.
give a man a fish and he has one meal. teach a man to fish and he is capable of obtaining many meals for himself.
