I recently came accross a webpage which allowed you to view another persons desktop. (With the consent of that other person of course) This is ideal to provide IT support for far away family members. Does anyone know what companies offer that service?

GoToMyPC.com and LogMeIn.com are two services.

I use LogMeIn (which is meant for Windows XP and later) most of the time, but also use VNC (to view Apple iMac and Windows 98SE, Windows 95)

LogMeIn.com works well if the user has a Dynamic IP (when the IP changes each time they go online) but if you need to use VNC, then there are sites such as www.dnsstuff.com which will show the IP (of the user) from a browser.

Well its built into XP called remote assistance. Just check for it in the help files.

To use Remote Assistance
Open Help and Support Center.
Click Tools.
Click Remote Assistance.

goto www.logmein.com
sign up for the free account, have your friend sign in with the same login id and password and add his pc. you can then log in to his pc as long as they are connected to the internet.
its easy and simple to do.
good luck.
microsoft has software built in called remote desktop assistance, but doesnt work well for some firewalls and antivirus programs. www.logmein.com will bypass all firewalls.

If you use Remote Desktop they won't be able to see what you're doing as it will open a seaprate console for you to work in - this can be good, or not so good if you're trying to show them something.

A program I use is called VNC ( get it from http://www.realvnc.com ). It's free, easy to install and use and you can also show them stuff as you do it on the screen.

http://www.realvnc.com/
It is a free remote access application to download to see the viewer across a network. This can include the Internet.
Please review all help section prior to downloading.

If you only want to look at the desk top itself, you can ask this person to do a screen capture of his desk top (Ctrl+F12), save it in a file then send it to you as attachment.
