VERY good friends,my good man. VERY,VERY good friends. They had a great relationship....they not only made love with each other, they were BEST friends. There were several indications about the physical side of their relationship. Trust me on this....Matt is my passion...always has been.

I heard Miss Kitty took on a "nephew" from infancy, supposedly her sister's boy. Looked alot like Dillon but hey, who's to say? Dillon even paid his way into an eastern college and folks thought that was strange. There was alot of whisperin' amongst the town folk and since they all liked Miss Kitty none of it reached her ears. Good woman, she was.

There was always that ambiguity....
However, when Gunsmoke was a radio series (!) and Matt was played by William Conrad, rehearsal tapings could get pretty raunchy, ie, sounds of heavy breathing, frontier belts being unbuckled, squeaking bedsprings, etc...The audience may never had known, but the cast was pretty sure, and had a lot of fun with it when not on the air.

That's what the producers would have you believe. In reality, I think there was at least a bit of huggin and kissin going on. I real life, James Arness(Matt) was and still is a very happily married man.
