Heres a few simple tricks that you may know already:
All tricks are started with your left hand on your hip and your right hand holding the middle of the baton.
Horizontals:
Hold the middle of the baton in your right hand parallel to your body so that the big end is towards the ceiling and the little end is facing the floor. Imagine a large witches cauldron in front of you and the baton is your spoon that you are going to stir the cauldron with. Start stirring the pot counter-clockwise. Start in the middle of the pot and slowly being to stir out towards the edge of the pot. You should still be doing this with one hand. Just start stirring small and then slowly make the circles bigger until your baton is skimming the top of the pot. Once this happens your baton should be horizontal, hence the name horizontals. Once you get them really even, you should put your arm out to the side instead of in front of you. It takes a while to master this but its one of the fundamental tricks in baton. Soon you will be able to do it really fast and then toss it in the air and catch it.
Figure 8's-
Hold the baton the same way we started for horizontals. Big end towards the ceiling, little end towards the floor. Your baton should be straight out in front of you in your right hand. This one is easy, you just need to make a figure-8 with the baton in front of you. Once you get really good at this they will become completely vertical and flat. These are also known as verticals. (you can do them backwards or left handed too!) Later on you will be able to do pinwheels and wind ups with this trick. (pinwheels are essentially figure 8s that you start on the left side of your body, move over your head and drop down to the right side so you're twirling circles, or pinwheels)
Elbow/arm/leg roll-
You should always start rolls & tosses with a full clockwise arm circle of the baton in front of you. To be a bit more descriptive you would be standing facing a wall with the baton in your right hand and making a circle with your baton in a clockwise fashion. As if you're standing behind the circle. Anyway, after you do that you can go into just about anything. Hold your left elbow up so your left hand is in a fist between where your chin and collar bones meet. Point your elbow out in front of you so it makes a flat table. You can now make a circle with your baton in your right hand (because, as i mentioned, thats how you start almost anything), put your elbow up and continue to make the same circle, this time setting the baton on the left side of your elbow, then picking it up on the right side. (placing it on your "elbow table") Soon you can let it go and it will roll over your elbow. After you've mastered this you can try it with your arm and then lifting your leg. Then, you can do a double elbow roll or double arm roll. You can combine them however you'd like.
High Toss-
Start by making a full circle with the baton in your right hand (as i started the last trick). Keep your hand in the middle of the baton. Make a circle and a half this time, releasing the baton after a FULL circle and a half. So when the baton is pointing towards the ceiling, that is when you should let it go. Then simply catch it. Then toss it higher, and then spin once under it. Make sure you always toss it straight up in in air in front of you. Never release the baton holding on to the ends or when it is not pointing towards the ceiling. Disaster may strike then.
I hope this helps because its really hard to describe how to twirl baton so I tried to be as detailed as possible.
Good luck!

You're looking in the wrong spots. Party stores don't have anything to do with batons! And even though your kids are dancing to music, you don't kneed a baton to make music. *think of it like that whenever a problem like this occurs* You should look at Dick's Sporting Goods *they should have them* or check the phone book for dance studios or dancewear stores near you

The secret is getting your fingers familiar with the spins; When I used to twirl, I'd grasp the baton in the center with my right hand, tilt the larger end into my thumb and use my fingers and wrist to "spin" it around my thumb area...make sense?
