If it's 2:30 pm in NJ and it's 5 hours later in Italy, then it is 7:30 pm in Italy.

If you can add the number of required hours without going past 12:00, the AM or PM status of the time does not change. 2:30 pm plus 5 hours is 7:30 pm. 6pm plus 5 hours is 11pm. But 8pm plus 5 hours would be 13pm, and of course there is no such time. At 12:00, PM switches to AM. So it's 1 hour past 12, and we ran out of PM time, so that makes it 1am.

Italy is actually 6 hours ahead of New Jersey. Is the 5 hours a typo or do then mean 'after 5 more hours have passed in Jersey City (7:30 p.m.) what will the time be in Italy? In the latter case it would be 1:30 a.m. of the next day.
