Actually, they should be prosecuted for lying to get elected. However, since the politicians are in control, I don't think they will vote for something that will put a crimp in how they do things.

Of course, there are some promises that a politician should not make. They can push for something all they want, but if the other branches of government get in their way, then there is nothing they can do about it.

I personally feel politicians must be prosecuted for failing to implement the promises made to the public at the time of begging for votes. They mention in their pamphlets what all they would do for the puiblic if they win,but then it is always contrary to what they claim in their pamphlets.

They can not play with the lives of people they woo. There should be a special law to tackle them so that they do not make false promises in future knowing well that they could be prosecuted by the law of the land.

For their failure the poor people who vote them suffer and suffer and there is no respite to their problems being sorted out. This is no democracy but only hypocrisy. In democracy votes are counted and not weighed otherwise most of the problems would be sorted out.

Prosecution is the right way but then the public should not allow such people to enter their areas knowing well that they are good for nothoing.

the politicians being lawmakers are above law and are never punished but go scot free. Our Railway Minister is the greatest example for not being punished inspite of corruption charges levelled agaisnt them. There are many ministers and mps with criminal records. No steps are taken to remove them or punish them. Implementation of poll promises is an eye wash Like construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya by BJP was an eyewash and was never implemented. One of the reasons for the down fall of the BJP government inthe last poll was the non implementation of its poll promises to construct Ram temple. The people of INdia are capable of throwing out unpopular leaders and governments

that is a very good question, I am going to do some research and see if the people can sue for breach of contract when a politician promises he will do some thing and forgets this promise after he is elected,I realize he can't do anything on his own but he should at least introduce bills to substantiate his promise and if it doesn't pass with other congressmen then we can vote to out st the ones who voted him down, I do believe this can be done, and if so I will put this on answers.

A politician can try to implement anything that they want if they do not have the backing of all three branches then it goes no where. so promises are just promises to attempt.

First, people can only be prosecuted for criminal offenses. There is no criminal statute against making campaign promises.

Second, it's only a non-binding statement of intent, not a contract. So, people cannot even sue for breach of contract.

Personally, I'd like to see a law (or constitutional amendment) where politicians who make campaign promises can be held to them like contracts, and where anyone who voted for that politician can sue them to remove them from office (not for damages) if they break that promise.

Because there would be no politicians left to actually run if they were prosecuted for breaking a promise.

Our constitution does not stipulate that every one should speak truth only.In other words there is no objection constitutionally giveing promises to people currently Rahul Gandhi is promising the youth of UP a very bright future .He does not and need not explain how he proposes to do it

They should be, but since they make the rules I think they have already covered the subject in their favour.
The other way of punishing them is not to vote for them second, third, forth, fifth...........time or until they are one step away from a grave.
Using the example of Punjab in the latest elections, they distribute enough liquore, drugs, money etc.. to cloud the judgement of the voting masses, and keep getting re-elected.
