My extension project starts this year. My intention is to labour for tradesmen in an effort to cut down and minimise costs. This will include foundations, 1st fix joinery work, bricklayers etc. Do you think I am mad?

In theory this works but you have to ask yourself

" How much can I earn in my regular job; and how many labourer's/material would this pay for each day?"

Also "do I need to be there?"

If the tradesmen you have hired are competent? Then give them a price to do the job, so you don't need to be there to supervise them, as long as everyone knows what's expected of them.

Not at all as long as you will be available to do the work when and where they need you to do it, and not at work elsewhere. This will allow you to watch what the builders are doing and give you a really good idea of whats involved when it comes to construction work. Good luck,

if you are fit enough and can find a contractor to agree, go for it. word of advice, let the contractor run the job. remember, you are just a laborer.
