It should start with a strategy. Identify what you want to do - or at least a few areas/jobs that you want.

You must consider this a marketing project. Create a resume - some people will create more than one depending on different jobs/industries. Also create a cover letter that you can modify as needed for each application. Develop your 'story' - 3-5 key messages that you want to convey to a recruiter / potential employer. It sounds like you may also benefit from some practice interviews. Try to find a local networking group or contact your University's career center - they may have some resources available for you. Next, get a haircut and get a suit.

Depending on your geography, career goal industry, you will want to make contacts with some 'headhunters'. These guys will give you a realistic idea about expectations and will work on your behalf to get you interviews. Of course, you will want to also post your resume on-line (monster, career builder, hot jobs). Do NOT do this until you are comfortable that your resume is top-notch. You only have 1 opportunity to make a first-impression with your next employer.

When you start to land interviews, do not come across as anxious (desperate). Have confidence in your abilities and be sure to follow-up with thank you letters that reinforce your strengths in relation to the position that you are interviewing for. Good luck!

How can you be 37 and never have held a job? Wow....ok, you start by networking through friend, family, alumni associations, church groups, etc. Let those folks know you are looking for a job and ask them to point you to people who might be of assistance - HR folks, recruiters, and so on. Use your network for information - they can help review your resume, give you interview practice, and generally help you prepare.

A good book for your situation is "What Color Is Your Parachute", the classic job-hunting manual.

Job boards like monster.com, careerbuilder, hotjobs, etc. have lots of free advice and resources that you can use as well.

Good luck.
