http://www.ehow.com/how_5444_treat-urinary-tract.html
Urinary tract infections are also known as UTIs, cystitis and bladder infections. They are most common in women, but men and children can also get them, and almost all of them are caused by E. coli bacteria.
Instructions
STEP 1: Drink plenty of fluids. Begin as soon as you feel the first signs and symptoms. Drink up to several gallons in the first 24 hours after the onset of symptoms. Doing this can actually flush the bacteria out and wash it away. STEP 2: Choose water as your primary fluid. STEP 3: Drink cranberry juice. The second choice is orange juice. They make your urine more acidic, which helps kill the bacteria and provide relief from symptoms. STEP 4: Take cranberry tablets or capsules if you are unable to drink or locate the juice. Take them with a large glass of water. STEP 5: Take vitamin C with a bioflavonoid complex, at least 2,000mg per day. Divide the dose. This helps acidify the urine and also strengthens your immune system. STEP 6: Urinate whenever you feel the urge. Don't hold it in. Try not to be in a place where there is no available bathroom. STEP 7: Empty your bladder completely when you urinate. Urine left in the bladder provides a good breeding ground for bacteria. STEP 8: Avoid alcohol, caffeinated and carbonated drinks, and spicy foods. They can worsen symptoms. STEP 9: Avoid sexual intercourse while you are having symptoms. STEP 10: Refrain from taking bubble baths or using bath oils while having symptoms. STEP 11: They can cause increased irritation. STEP 12: Pour warm water over genital area while you are urinating. This helps relieve burning when you urinate, which is a common symptom of urinary tract infections. STEP 13: Eat parsley, celery and watermelon. They act as natural diuretics. STEP 14: Use colloidal silver, which is a natural antibiotic. Use as directed on label. STEP 15: Take the entire prescription of antibiotics if your doctor prescribes them. STEP 16: Do not stop just because you are feeling better. Not taking the full prescription can cause a relapse or recurrence. STEP 17: Take acidophilus with each meal if you are on antibiotics. It will help maintain and restore normal bacterial growth. Tips & Warnings
Some sexually transmitted diseases have symptoms similar to urinary tract infections. See a doctor if you suspect that you may have an STD.
See a doctor if you have a fever, chills, pain in the flank area, nausea or vomiting - especially if the symptoms develop rapidly. Also see a doctor if symptoms do not improve after 24 hours of self-care, or if you are unable to urinate at all.
Overall Tips & Warnings
If symptoms persist or if you have specific medical conditions or concerns, we recommend you contact a physician. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to dilute the concentration of bacteria in the urinary tract. (This is particularly important for women who work outside the home who tend to restrict their fluid intake during the day).
Urinate frequently (every 2-3 hours) or as soon as you feel the urge.
Avoid wearing tight clothing that restricts the circulation of air, traps moisture, and promotes bacterial growth: choose loose clothing and select underwear with a cotton crotch.
Practice good hygiene on a daily basis: clean the area around the vagina and anus carefully after urination or a bowel movement; wipe from front to back to avoid contamination.
Drink 1-2 glasses of cranberry juice each day, which can help prevent certain common UTI-causing bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall. (This is especially important for older women).
If you are menopausal or postmenopausal, ask your doctor about treatment for thinning vaginal and/or urethral lining, which increases the risk of bladder infection. Sexually active women should take steps to reduce risk of infection. You and your partner should wash your hands, pubic hair, and external genitalia before sexual intercourse. Urinate before and after intercourse. Monitor your sexual positions, and avoid positions or activities that seem to cause UTIs. Spermicidal gels and poorly fitting diaphragms may increase the chances of UTIs.

Cranberry juice is effective, but contraindicated if you're taking warfarin (coumadin).
Drinking "insane" amounts of water is dangerous, and taking too much may actually aggravate a UTI as it changes the natural pH of urine. Drink a healthy amount of water, aim for 2 litres in a day.
