lots of people with lots of money are eccentric; that is the polite word for nuts. That explains the dwarfs too. They kept working and working, piling up more and more diamonds. They had no housekeeper except for dopey, and he was...well, dopey. So the house never really looked its best with him in charge of cleaning. None of them had girlfriends, so maybe too they had alternative life styles and had to live in the country somewhere away from the townspeople, so they wouldn't be bothered about their living arragements. They must have had some habits too. One of them was always smiling, one always grumpy, etc. etc. And one of them was "doc"...maybe he provided the prescriptions needed to keep them in the conditions they were in.

Well you see, they had to walk to work. No cars were invented back then. And if you look at any mining or indutrial areas, there isn't any nice housing or living conditions.
You don't see any nice mansions near those African Diamond mines.
Plus they didn't want their neighbors to know they were rich and get set up for a home invasion or robbery

They lived on the outskirts of the kingdom. If they'd had a big house built and if everyone knew of their riches, they would've been hunted down, robbed and killed. That's just how it was back in the day in Fairytale Land...lol
