First question: Are you sure their ants? I mean as in NOT termites. Those I would call an exterminator for. But for the ants;
I heard BORAX works. It's a detergent found in most food stores. Also the ant traps but use different varieties because the ants will get used to one kind. Also CLEAN everything. Keeping food in air tight storage containers and cleaning up any messes will help to keep any bug population down. If all else fails call a specialist. The problem may be bigger than you can handle.

Use a solution of Ivory liquid soap and water.

Mix 6 or 8 ounces of soap to a gallon of water, and you can spray them with a household sprayer bottle.

But to get the whole nest:

Watch where the ants are going/ coming from and follow them back to the anthill or nest. You can dump the solution directly into the anthill and soak the ground around it. This solution works for earwigs and many other insect pests. You can also put a small bead of straight Ivory liquid soap on the outside edge of the thresholds of the exterior doors, ants and earwigs won't cross it to come into the house.

Terro, it is a liquid you put a drop on a little piece of cardboard, you'll see the ants coming to drink it. It takes a couple days and they take it back to the nest and it kills them all. Works great! Just put it somewhere where your cat can't get at it, near where you see the ants. It is the only thing I found that actually works!

Ants will not cross over a chalk line. I had ants always trying to get in a big bag of dog food. I drew a circle around it with chalk, and they would not cross it. I have also heard that corn meal will get rid of them too, they get it on their feet and carry it back to their nest, eat it, they swell up and die...This one I have not tried yet. But I know the chalk thing worked for me. Good luck. I am a pet lover too.

Ants will not cross a line of chalk. If you can find the source of where they are getting in, use chalk to draw a line, and they wont come in from the outside. For the ants inside your house, try to get them all in one palce and draw a circle around them in chalk.

If your talking about ants outside, you can pour grits on the mounds or hot water. Inside ,you can put out vinegar where they are coming in. I also put baby powder under my dogs water bowl outside and no more ants.

Try ant traps from Raid or Ortho. Put them near areas where you see ants such as a garbage pail.
