The central tendency of the society has been to worship heroes and people therefore like to become heroes.
In the ancient days, the physically stronger men became the Kings. Later those who are great warriors or generals became kings. Kings used to nurse their children as heroes. So the son became the king after the death of the father king. But all kings were dictators and most of them oppressive despots surrounded by psychophants and corrupt adminitrators of the kingdom. Under demcracy, nothing changes except that the King is selected through varying degrees of free and fair (allowing for booth capturing, ballot paper tampering, bribing / threatening voters). Once you are elected to the post of Presiedent/ Prime Minister, you turn a despot more often oppressive one supporting nepotism and corruption. This is the central tendency. This has nothing to with capitalism. Most third world countries are far from capitalism: they are State controlled countries with dictators in power. They call themselves democratic, socialist, communist republics. Despotisms is the central theme. For capitalism to flourish you need democracy and vice versa. But despots come on their own.

In our country (U.S), I don't see the extreme of authoritarian dictatorship as possible. We have so many checks and balances that even the President can't do his job without Senate and Congress altering the game plan or the sentiment of the voting masses. I think the government knows the educated people will remain powerful and informed. The use of the Internet has changes every way we communicate and how we align power in the future. Used to be if something happened that we didn't like or understood, we stood around like dopes wondering what to do and then eventually settling on the outcome. Now we can communicate thru many more press outlets and the Internet and come up with ways to stem the tide or at least make it more difficult for the government of pull the wool over our eyes.
