I used to play the drums.I have found some of the best crowd-pleasers (not to mention easy as hell) are by The Best cover band of all times "THE CRAMPS". The lead singer believes if your going to cover a song, either copy it note for note OR completely rearrange it.
look for the album 'gravest hits'

I'm in a 30+ band that focuses on harder rock, we've had very good responses to:
T.V. Eye - Iggy and the Stooges
The Trooper - Iron Maiden
Liar - Sex Pistols
Black Diamond - Kiss
Mr. Crowley - Ozzy
Running Riot - **** Sparrer
Suffragette City - David Bowie
Black #1 - Type O Negative
Somebody Put Something In My Drink - Ramones
She - Misfits
21st Century( Digital Boy) - Bad Religion
...and yes, Cinnamon Girl - Neil Young
Remember, give the songs justice and play them YOUR way if you want!
As long as it rocks, they'll dig it.
Have fun!!!

I am in my early thirties and I enjoy hearing bands cover songs from the eighties, but with an edge. Don't play them note for note they way they were played in the eighties. A local band in St. Louis did a cover of Duran Duran's 'Rio' and they killed it! If your audience is roughly the same age as you, they will appreciate a few of these songs mixed in with the newer stuff.

take some inspiration from Radio 1 Cover Album some may not be you cup of tea but others are simply amazing, I hear that "all i want for christmas" is a good song to cover for a rock band. MCR did it and it sound pretty good!

Sammy Hagar's "Tequila",Trooper's "Raise a Little Hell",Bryan Adams' "Summer of "69,are all appreciated by all ages and for a slower pace the Stones' "Memory Motel" and Mark Cohn's "Walkin' in Memphis' appeal to a cross section of ages & types
