I have several rats and if gotten from a reputable breeder, who hand raises them, you'll find a lovable human friendly pet.
My favorite rat would sit on my shoulder and take rides in the car and go for walks with me. He'd also come when I called his name and did tricks with a little ping pong ball.
Males are laid back and females are more active and busy.

How much space do you have?
My mom saved up and bought her first horse at age 14. She kept it at a stable near her home. She still had the horse when my sister and I were born... and eventually my parents built a barn on our 3 acres for Kai and 2 other horses. They were very cool, and Kai, especially, seemed to love my mom. Of course, she was an animal lover since the beginning, and has been a vet tech for the same animal hospital for over 25 years. Whatever you choose, educate yourself. Selfish, ignorant, irresponsible pet owners are a huge problem.
If you're looking for something small, I just don't think you're going to get the relationship a pet owner generally has with his/her dog(s) and/or cat(s). My daughter had a hamster, but it's not even the same. Or maybe I'm a little biased against rodents. They just seem like nervous, dirty creatures to me, and ought not to be pets (they're pet food - in fact, one of my cats tried to eat the thing on no less than 3 occasions).
Maybe ask this question at a pet store or veterinary clinic.

Surprisingly, rats make wonderful pets. My sister owns many rats. She will take one out and place them in her lap while she watches tv. They end up curling up in her lap like a cat would. And just like cats purr, rats do to. Well, sorta. Sometimes when you pet them, they chatter their teeth to show you that they are enjoying it.
I have hamsters and chinchillas. The hamster could care less about me. As for the chinchillas, they are very friendly and very soft. The only problem is that you really need to learn how to take care of them properly. The room they are caged in needs to be a certain temperture. They can only eat specific types of food and they need to take dust baths. Its best to provide them with a large cage since they are used to living in the mountains.
I've also had birds at one of the places I used to live at. They weren't mine, and I'm glad they weren't. Big birds like cockatoos and macaws are VERY loud. Especially when you don't pay attention to them. They can also bite when they are moody. Depending on the bird, some can take off a finger, while others can just crush it. If you want a bird, I always liked the african grey. They usually only bond with one person, so if its not you, good luck trying to take them out of the cage. As for small birds, they usually do not get very friendly toward their owners. Whatever you do, do not put a mirror in their cage. Your bird will definately not be friendly with you.
If you want a friendly pet, but not all the aggravations, the rat is the best choice.

No matter whatever kind of pets you take, if you are a loving owner, the pet will be loyal and faithful to you. It would be better to take dogs or cats.
Do not take birds and cage them up. You yourself will feel sorry for them.

Rabbits, squirrels, pot belly pigs, horses, goats, some birds, and racoons. I don't think snakes and lizards, and other reptiles do; but, even bears, big cats and elephants can become friendly to their owners and/or trainers.
