Ask any expert in the field and they will tell you that 90% of all burglaries are preventable. So if the odds are so good that it will happen to you and it is such a preventable event-what is it you have to do to stop the burglars? I am so glad you asked.
Sometimes the best home security is implemented when you are the one making the assessment and any corrective action- a do it yourself home security plan.
Here are home security tips to think about that will definitely discourage or flat out stop a potential intruder from entering your house. It is not an all inclusive list but one that if followed will certainly go a long way toward making your home more secure.
1. Take a critical look at your house from the outside. Is your house well lit? Are there hiding places near doors and windows? If you can spot a potential weakness in your home’s “look” you can bet a professional burglar can exploit it. Remember that light is a burglars’ enemy-darkness a friend.
2. What could slow down a burglar from entering your home? Simple home security devices such as locks on doors(deadbolts are best) and windows, bars, grates-items that are visible from the exterior of the house will not only act as a deterrent but slow down an intruder should he decide to try to enter. The more time it takes to break into a home, the more discouraged a burglar will become. Time is the enemy of the burglar.
3. How noisy can you make it if someone gains entry? Noise is also the enemy of the burglar. There are many home security alarms activated by doors or windows opening or by motion. The sound of a barking dog, real or recorded, are very effective and will scare most burglars away.
Lights, noise and time-they are the three biggest enemies of an intruder. If you implement these home security tips to fortify your house you may well avoid a lot of potential break-ins. But there are some other things that will help as well.
--Move valuables away from outside view. Don’t risk tempting someone. Consider putting small valuables in Diversion Safes.
--Start or join a neighborhood watch. Strangers usually stick out in a neighborhood and should be reported immediately to police.
--Make your house look occupied when you are gone. Burglars are much less likely to consider a house they feel is occupied.
--Lock your doors and windows. Even when you are gone for a short period of time. Summertime presents a huge temptation to leave doors or windows open. Don’t give in to the temptation. I have seen so many garage doors open only one or two feet to let the heat out-just enough to let a burglar in.
Many police departments as a public service will offer advice on how to make your home more secure. Call for availability in your area.
There are several simple things you can do to make your home less prone to intrusion by a burglar. Start with an assessment on how to make your home well lit, more secure, and in the event of an entry-how to make it very noisy. Light, time, and noise are the enemies of the professional burglar.
Three other tactics might be used to help prevent a burglary are home security alarms or burglar alarms, property marking and home security cameras.
Property marking is simply marking all your valuables with an identifying "signature" so they can readily be identified when recovered. Methods of marking include micro dots, laser pens, and ultraviolet pens. The key here is to have signage letting everyone know your property won't be so easy to sell on the black market because it is marked. Believe it or not most burglars do read and study their targets.
Home security cameras as part of a home security system are very effective in two respects. First as a deterrent. If a burglar sees that a property is covered with surveillance cameras they will have second thoughts in targeting that property. Second, if they are not that smart and decide to enter anyhow, a good surveillance system will capture the images of the perpetrator making it easier for the police to capture the bad guys. Home security cameras can be wired or wireless, real or dummy, indoor or outdoor, or any combination thereof.
Alarms can act as a successful deterrent. 90 % of police believe alarms deter burglary attempts. There are all kinds of alarms including expensive home security alarm systems monitored by ex-police officers. Silent, noisy, wired, wireless, door, window, motion, monitored, unmonitored-you name it and there is an alarm for it. Signage again is the key. Let burglars know they are in for a hard time ahead of time. The thing is alarms work.

A home security system is best, but if you don't want all that, you can simply get some window stickers that say "this property is alarmed" and that may prevent some. As the other posters said, locks on windows, and a good lock or two on the door is a good idea, I have always had the kind that you need a key on the inside as well, that way if they come on through a window, they just cant go out the door.

Use common sense around the home. Pick up mail, newspaper daily. Make it hard to tell you are not home. Don t let yourself get into a routine. Mix it up. Car outside once in awhile, car inside most of the time. Try not to leave for work the same exact minute every day. If you have two vehicles alternate. Leave one outside once in awhile or carpool if you can. Put a stick in the sliding window tracks. You can make it so the window can be left open a couple of inches. You won t fool the professional criminal by timers on lights etc. They will just knock on the door or call the phone to see if you are really home or not. If your curtains or blinds are mostly open when your home, don t close them all when gone. It is better to partially close them just like you have them when your home. Don t make it easy for someone casing your place by a big production of going away on a trip. Try to pack the car in the garage or in back of the house out of sight. Believe it or not, criminals do case houses. This is a big one that drives me nuts, never leave the packaging of a new tv or stereo by the garbage can to advertise about your new item.
Pay attention as to who is coming around your house and neighborhood.
If you see a strange vehicle hanging around, write down the license and type of vehicle. It will probably turn out to belong there but your never know. Situational awareness is something that has to be practiced. Never tell a person other than a friend, you are going away or can t be home to meet with them. Just tell them it is not convenient at that time. Its none of thier business and you just broke a line of defense. Be smart!

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?F0Pd
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
