Rats and hamsters are completely different, i have both. Rats are the most intelligent rodents and are fab pets. A rat is more similar to a dog than a hamster, they are that different. And remember you cannot keep a rat on its own, its needs the company of at least one other rat, whereas hamsters are solitary, unless of course you want dwarf hamsters, then they should be kept in pairs.
To answer your question, hamsters are the easiest to look after. Rats tend to be noisier aswell, because you need to keep them together and they play fight, but sleep most of the day. If you want a pet that easy, get a hamster, if you want fun and cuddles get a rat.

Hamsters will definitely take less of your time if that is what you are looking for. I own both rats and hamsters. Rats are VERY social, bright and need lots of interaction. They need cage changes every 2-3 days.
Hamsters can take you or leave you. They are happy to be held, but just as happy to live in their little hut. They are quiet, and only need a cage change once/week. Don't let this low maintenance pet fool you into thinking he is no maintenance. He still needs food and water every day. He will also need a lot of handling when he is young to be sure that he will let you handle him as he gets older.
Good luck

If you are only prepared to have 1 don't buy a rat as they need the company of another rat of the same sex.
Hamsters like being alone and are less bothered about human company.

It depends on what you are looking for...
Typically rats make the better pet.
Hamsters can become friendly, but sometimes, they don't. They usually don't adjust to your schedule, and they stay timid. They have to be alone(with the exception of some dwarf breeds).
Rats almost always become friendly. They need a lot of attention, but if you can't give them a lot of attention, you can put more than one of the same sex in a cage to keep eachother company. Rats can easily become litter trained, and they can be taught to only go in their cages. Rats usually adujst to your schedule very quickly. They are nocturnal by nature but can easily become diurnal with a little work.
You should do some research, go to a pet store or breeder and find out what it takes to keep each one and handle both of them for a while to find out which one you like better...
ultimatly it is up to you...
...hope it helps...

ia have both as we speak and i would prefer a rat because they are intelligent. hammys on the other hand are soooooo cute. i have a baby dwarf and she is rele cute. when my teddy died i got rele sad and i do miss her but i think rats make way better pets. they actualy enjoy your attention and solve problems. try both and see witch 1 is for you. you can train a rat to use a litter box and they are loyal and once u raise it from a baby i can garantee it will nwver run away. hammys run away at the first chance they get.
