If the car has the original key, the ignition lock may have failed.Try moving the key all ways possible (up, down, in, out) while turning it, moving the steering wheel with the other hand.If this doesn't work, put some lubricant spray into the keyhole and wait a few minutes (brake liquid works also fine), then try again. if no result is reached, you need a locksmith.A good one.

Your steering is locking the ignition switch, try these steps:
1) Put the key in the ignition and apply pressure to turn the vehicle on.
2) With your other hand turn the steering wheel left and right, one of these directions should not allow any movement, go the other way then, you may need to turn the wheel hard
Hopefully with a couple good tries the steering wheel should disengage the ignition switch and allow it to turn, it's just locked up. Happened to my girlfriend and she was frantic.
Best of Luck!!!

The ignition switch was one of the first things I had to replace on my W126. The switch is one of the minor weaknesses of Benzes built between the late 70s and about 1990 and they seem to last about 15 -17 years. If you can't get the key to turn by wriggling the steering wheel, you will have to do repairs on the switch. These are not as difficult or expensive as you may think. The actual lock will be OK, its just the mechanism around it. Check the Mercedes owners sites on the net, as I have seen detailed instructions on how to do this job.

If the ignition key won't turn even if you rock the steering wheel, it's because the ignition lock cylinder is worn out. The procedure to fix this isn't pretty, you can find it here:
