Do they ever feel like somewhat quick stomach aches?

The most painful contractions I've felt were like period cramps--just BIGGER. My back ached, my legs hurt, etc. Generally, you'll know you're having "real" contractions when they take your breath away and don't go away from changing your position--regardless of how bad they hurt.

I had sharp back pain of course it isn't a constant pain it comes and go every few minutes, but you can have them in your lower stomach it depends what kind of labor you have. They will get more and more stronger as you get closer to delivery. When I had my first child no-one told me you have contractions afterwards you deliver the baby, from your uterus contracting back to the orginal size it is unpleasant too. Let me say congraulations on the baby though.

Usually at the beginning of labor it feels like tightnening. It does get more painful as you dilate. Most women experience back pain too, which is just as bad. Everyone's pain threshold is different. So what is extremely painful to one woman may just hurt to another. Your coping mechanisms may differ too.
