With the election coming up and just to increase my awareness of what's going on around me I've been trying to follow world events and politics more closely. All my life I've been pretty indifferent to this stuff, so now when watching the news or trying to even piece together my opinions on things here and there I'm pretty clueless. Are there are any online resources that offer something of a politics for beginners view towards current events - and maybe a site that explains things not only in terms of today but also how they tie back to previous events? Maybe a site that might not necessarily "dumb it down" a bit, but at least does a good job at documenting and highlighting political events of this decade so I can catch up a bit? I'd really like to be able to catch up and keep up, so any sites you could recommend would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'm not looking for your opinions on "thought control" and what not. I'm perfectly aware that the news is generally not the best source of information out there.

Start at the local level:

In the USA (assuming you're a US citizen), State Governors sign bills making them in to state law. Below is a link on the overview of that legislative process.

The second website will allow you to find your state website, where you will find what bills are currently being addressed.

After finding out what issues are being considered, research the issues and send your opinion to your governor.

Consider a variety of sources. Use search engines like "google" or "y!" by issue topic for research purposes. You can even google search "search engines" for a broader or more specific range.

The federal level can be researched by the same process. I just like to start closer to home.

I wished more people on Y!A would spend time doing this instead of just blowing hot air here. It would be a lot more proactive and democratic.

Best to you! Welcome to the Process!
