1st off, without proper information technicians cannot make proper diagnostics which lead to improper repairs.
2nd, Assuming that you have an automatic, how much fluid is left in your transmission? I would say not much, being as you have to put it on level ground to move.
3rd, put a quart of dexron II transmission fluid in your transmission and then go directly to a trusted and certified technician to have them do proper diagnostics and therefore a proper repair. It sounds like you have a leak on your transmission and it needs repaired.
Good luck and hope this helps.

If it is an automatic, have you fluid checked. You may also need to have the fluid flushed. If you do need to have the fluid flushed make sure you take it to a shop that can do a complete flush with the filter removed. This will allow them to check the pan for excess particles in the oil. From that they will be able to know if you need to have the transmission rebuilt. If it works fine once the car has warmed up, it would tell me you may need a flush. Now if it is a manual transmission try this and see if it helps. Put the transmission in Reverse before you start the engine. Push in on the clutch and start the car. Then slowly release the clutch and see if the car moves. If so you have bad syncho rings and you are looking at a Trans rebuild. If the car still does not go in reverse then you may have a clutch that needs to be bled out. No matter what, you are looking at taking it to a shop and have it professionally diagnosed for proper repair.

You have not said it is manual transmission but I assume it is. I would say if only the reverse gear is playing-up then it is a gearbox problem. If other gears are also failing then could be the clutch. Sometimes this problem happens to old cars with worn synchro-mesh, try putting into forward gear first then try reverse.

I can give you a giant answer using big mechanical words telling you all kinds of crazy things you wont understand. I can also say I've been a mechanic for 80+ years because you have no way of checking. Short answer, if you have to ask whats wrong with your transmission on yahoo, its time to take it to a reputable shop. I wish you luck with your problem

sounds like the fluid is low in the transmission or it is slipping badly, I would have the fluid and filter changed in the transmission and then have them add a bottle of Lucas transmission fix to it.

Hi
If this is an auto box then you could be low on transmission fluid.
