I can't figure out if BYU is more like Notre Dame or more like Bob Jones. (I hope the differences between those latter two universities are obvious.)

BYU is legit....you can always check through a neutral source like Petersons. But also check to see if the program you want is also accredited. You can usually see that on the site for the professional association.

Brigham Young University is Regionally accredited.

Bob Jones is not regionally accredited, though they have some useless Christian school accrediation.

Notre Dame is also regionally accredited.

So, officially, BYU is legitimate.

BYU is certainly not Bob Jones, and yes, as you point out, there are some differences between BYU and UND, but fear not, both are accredited and completely legit.
