Heathcliff was my first love, I think. I'm sure that he is to blame for so many turbulent relationships over the years.
I also fell for the Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice and another vampire called Zillah, who was in a book by Poppy Z. Bright.
I also have a rather disturbing fascination with Lucius Malfoy.
It appears that I like baddies .......
Who have you fallen for? The more inappropriate, of course, the better.

The more people reply, the more characters I remember being in love with. I too had a huge crush on Stanley from 'A Streetcar named Desire'. Also Rhett Butler from 'Gone with the Wind', Mr Darcy, Severus Snape, Emma Bovary and Edmund in 'King Lear'.
I also have a soft spot for Arabella Donn and, naturally, Des Esseintes. I have to say, I don't know why so many people are acting like this is a weird thing - I can only suggest that they don't really love literature if they don't love characters.

Don't listen to those people who say it's weird and that there's something wrong with you. There's not. It's a natural thing to happen--it's not like you actually think they're real and that you're going to have a relationship with them.
I know just what you mean.
The first one for me, I think, was when I was in 9th grade and read East of Eden by John Steinbeck. At the time I hadn't seen the movie with James Dean, so it's not like I had the picture of him in my mind when reading. But I remember writing about it in my journal after I read it, and I said that even though Cal (yeah, the "bad" one in the book) wasn't real, and I didn't know what he would look like if he were, I really had a thing for him.
More recently there's Ron Weasley (I can't stand Malfoy, though I do have mixed feelings about how evil he really is) and of course Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. A lot of those British books's male characters because they're so "gentlemanly" and romantic. Oh, yeah, and Chris in the Flowers in the Attic series. I know there are others, but those are what comes to mind right now.
Yeah, you need to live in the real world, but there's nothing wrong with having a bit of a crush on some of the characters in books. Especially when it's so hard to find guys in real life who compare.
BTW, I understand you falling for the baddies, but you should take a closer look at the good ones. :-)

YES!!! I fell in love with Lestat and Louis after my non-stop reading of the Interview With A Vampire by Anne Rice.
I also fell in love with Jamie Fraser in the book Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.
When the author makes everything so real it's not hard to fall in love with the character - you just can't help yourself. It's like Rhett Butler.
Jason, It's not about sex. It's about love. It's all a fantasy.

oh man!! it's so weird that you've asked this because I thought I was the only one!! When I was a kid I had the biggest crush on Speed Racer's older brother, Mark.
And now, I've been reading the Outlander series and so totally have the hots for Jamie Fraser who is this 6'2" red haired Celtic Scott from the eighteenth century. And he is perfect in every way and yeah, I often think, "why can't my boyfriend do that or be like that" but then I realize that he is a lot like him, but just more realistic and it's alright.
But you know, when I finished the series I missed him so much that I started reading it over again.

Haha, yes indeed. Why I think that in first grade, my concept of "love" would be very different from how I would view it now-I was head over HEALS for the Karate Kid.
And then, I fell hard for the outlaw in 'Still Life With Woodpecker', by Tom Robbins. Oh wow, good book.
P.s. Poppy Z Brite lives in New Orleans. I've seen her walking about before!

When I was young I used to wish I could meet someone like Prince Andrei (War and Peace) and I also thought that Geogette Heyer's Regency heroes were the ultimate in romance.
I used to, and still do, absolutely loathe Lord Peter Wimsey. What an affected prat!

Yes, but I can't say that they're literary (although 2 of them are based on characters from fiction). I fell in love with the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera (the one from the book, not so much...he's rather more disgusting than Gerard Butler), with Henry Fitzroy from Blood Ties (I haven't read the books yet, but they're on my "to do" list), and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And you're right...Heathcliff does have a certain something, doesn't he?
I also hate 2 literary characters like they did something to me personally Sue Bridehead from Jude the Obscure, and Helen of Troy (trashy self-centered ****...)

Lestat is supposed to insinuate that he's a homosexual, and you fell for him? He also has an incestuous relationship with his mother, and you fell for him? Try and read the book again they say that what they experience is a higher then sex, which is the only reason they don't feel the need to actually have sex as what they are doing is far more intimate and perverse although I kind of liked him my self although I'm a guy and that would make sense. Oh and he is not the bad guy if you've read the second book you'll see that he is a tormented and soul that has been pushed into this life which was not his choice and that Lewis lied a lot in the first book about the actual details of Lestat's crimes. Please read the book again and try to understand it.

Dirk Pitt from the Cussler NUMA books. But now that he has grown up children (they recently appeared out of nowhere and are taking over the novels) I have lost interest.
He was 6 foot 4 with black hair and green eyes.
