Domestic slavery was quite common in West Africa, although the Europeans organized the trade to a much greater magnitude and value. Free black slaveowners resided in states as north as New York and as far south as Florida, extending westward into Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri. According to the federal census of 1830, free blacks owned more than 10,000 slaves in Louisiana, Maryland, South Carolina, and Virginia. The majority of black slaveowners lived in Louisiana and planted sugar cane. The majority of black masters had not been slaves themselves. Yet, the ranks of black slave masters were diverse: some acquired slaves as soon as they had accumulated enough capital after their own freedom, others received slaves with their own freedom from their white masters, and others had been free for several generations.

I don't know the number but of course many free blacks had slaves, the blacks in Africa sold them to Yankee traders,to be sold in the north and the south.the North had many hundreds of thousands of slaves, that war wasn't about slavery, both north and south had slaves.
during the war over a 1000 blacks were murdered by whites JUST in New York City ,how many many 1000s of blacks were murdered by northerners during the civil war is not known.Lincoln freed the blacks so they would run away and fight the southerners.as he didn't proclaim northern slaves free ,just the C.S.A,.Yes just there slaves .Not the northerners slaves.he didn't care about there freedom..did you know that Gen Grant said he was Not going to free His slaves, and that Lincoln said he was shipping All blacks to South America,he called it colonization.he was shot before he could send them off.
That war was over states rights and the fact that tariffs were placed heavily on the south and because southerners don't get along with Yankees.and the Southerners were talking of ceding for many many years.they simply wished for there own government, the South and North were to different.economically and socially .and to this day still do not at all get along well with Yankees.

I don't know about the number, but yes blacks definitely owned slaves in the south. And of course black natives captured and sold other blacks into slavery from competing tribes in africa.

Have not ever heard this, but it is true that many blacks in Africa sold out their neighbors to slave traders to make a buck. Human depravity is its worst when morals are sacrificed for the love of money.

yes it is true and even more astounding is that they also owned indentured servants who were white. Pre-civil war many came from Europe by having their passage paid for by someone in the US and had to work out what was owed.
