I know that plantlike protists can live in colonies but im not sure about animal-like protists.

I don't think so. What makes them animal-like is their locomotion, which is not conducive to colony formation.

Some colonies will allow anyone so long as they obey the rules.

animal like protists, I think "volvox" is one.
