There has been a spread of television, but also a spread in books. Regarding the chap that posted the statistics from 1910 and today - in 1910 I don't suppose as many people could read as compared with today and I expect books back then were more of a luxury than they are today. We certainly have a wide range of books to suit all tastes today along with umpteen gossip magazines etc. Before TV there was radio, that too was probably accused of killing off reading. In conclusion (finally! you're probably thinking) I don't think TV has done much to interfere with adults reading but has probably affected children's' interest in books although, I agree with another answer that has pointed the finger at computers.

Sure it has. You can find many answers to one's questions, just listening to the TV. Also, the computer, even tho, it is a great information resource, it is quick and easy. As a young girl in my time, I learned so much more, reading a book or two from the library, and/or encylopedia, than watching the news. The History channel is chocked full of info, but if one sits for an hour to watch a program, it is still not enough information that one can get compared to reading.

I'd rather read a book any time than watch TV. The only programmes I like are 'Have I got News for You', Grumpy old Men and Grumpy old Women, which are hilarious.

I find that the News programmes are too pro Government, the comedy programmes are crude and most of the rest is too violent for me.

Well, let's check the facts:

1910: 0 television, 20 million books
2007: 1 billion televisions, 200 million books

Hmm. Looks like books are doing OK here .... although we are talking quantity rather than quality!

good books are still very popular, but both good and pathetic television shows are popular, so you could say... that television is preferred over books, but hasn't killed he habit of reading.
