Has there ever been a goalie as a captain (or assistant captain) for a NHL team?

in today's hockey goalies aren't allowed to skate over the centre ice as they will receive a penalty so that's why there are no goalie captains.

but there have been goalie captains in the past here they are:
-John Ross Roach His nicknames were "Little Napoleon" and "The Housecleaner".
-George Hainsworth (Montreal Canadiens)
-Charlie Gardiner (Chicago Blackhawks) was the only goalie to win a Stanley Cup as a captain.
-Bill Durnan (Montreal Canadiens) He was also the last goalie to be a captain in the National Hockey League.

The Montreal Canadiens of the 1940s or 1950s had Bill Durnan as their captain for a couple of seasons. However, the NHL came up with a rule saying that goalies can no longer be team captains, so Durnan was no longer allowed to be the Captain of the Habs, and that is why there are no goalies as team captains now.

I'm not sure but a while back there might have been. The rule now is that Goalies aren't allowed to be Captain or ALTERNATE Captain. For some reason I think I remember reading that one was before the rule was put in place.

According to National Hockey League (NHL) rules, the captain is to be the only player who is allowed to talk with referees about rule interpretations. Goaltenders may not be designated as captains or alternate captains because of the logistical challenges of having the goaltender relay rules discussions between referees and coaches and then return to the crease. The last goaltender who served as team captain was Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1947-1948 season.

yes, there has been in the past. There hasn't been any recently in the NHL, however. The last NHL goalie that has worn the C was Bill Durnan in 1948. In other leagues, however, there has been. For example, in the NHL lockout, Martin Brodeur was captain for the Primus World-Stars. No NHL goalie has worn the C since Bill Durnan in 1948.

I don't think so. There is no hard and fast rule prohibiting a goaltender from being a captain. The thing is that it would be an impractical position to hold as the goalie, while wearing about 40 pounds of gear, would have to skate from the net to confer with the referee on controversial calls. He'd be tuckered out pretty quickly.

Grandpa says Bill Durnan was captain of the Montreal Canadians in the late 1940's. Big Canadians fan, so I believe him. Hey, even if I knew Grandpa was wrong, I wouldn't argue with him.

He says Durnan's captaincy was before the rule change. They changed the rule because it was hard for the goalie to come and go from the goal crease to communicate between the referees and coaches. It probably slowed the game down as the referrees waited for Durnan to lumberly skate up the ice to talk to them.

It's actually against the rules for a goalie to be a captain or an alternate captain.. I don't know why this is a rule but it is. It maybe because their role is completely different from any skater... or because they aren't playing every game.
