More helpless than any minority race or gender, animals provide an opportunity for near-total altruism.

Yes, but I think it will be near impossible for the U.S to ever be world leaders in humane treatment to animals (look at the resistance to the fair treatment to the planet) especially as this country grows even more religiously fanatical. The premise of the kind of Christianity in this country teaches that we are above animals and nature and that it is man's right to dominate and destroy these things.
But its not futile we live in a supposed democracy were we have the freedom to call out our government and leaders and demand change; we just have to prove to them how it will benefit the U.S monetarily, otherwise it will never happen.
I am all for a green world there are so many benefits to it if people could just not fear change so much.

As for small mom and pop farms, they have made a come back in the organic niche, which is good, but there is something to be said for large farms that produce huge amounts of food for very cheap prices...that is what allows us to feed much of the world.

How we treat animals is a true test of our humanity. If we are to evolve we must stop spilling blood! That includes animal blood, especially slaughter for profit. There are those who still have blood lust and those of us who don't. Those who do are holding mankind back.
