Uruguay, in the 1950 WC final.

This event, known as the "maracanazo", is now the stuff of footballing lore and still hangs on the shoulders of brazilians whenever they play Uruguay.

As far as I'm concerned, this event has got to be one of the most impressive psychological defeats I've ever seen in sports. It's incredible how Brazil, the best footballing nation in the world--and the favourite to win wherever they play--can never win in Uruguay. and when they do win, they generally just squeak by with a penalty or something, against such a small nation.
