The quality of a picture will depend on the TV you have. A 32" half decent HDtv will look impressive having owned a ps3 and resold it and having played a HD DVD on Blue Ray there is a massive difference.
(X)Do you want a good quality pictrures in your games - if the answer is yes, then I would recommend you purchase a HDTV (Sony Bravia 32" is really good)
(X) if you want it to watch HD DVDs then - well there aren't many out yet so there isn't a massive need for PS3 or HD DVD player ( which PS3 has built in )
I would recommend you purchase XBOX360 without HD drive. It will be less expensive and has much more games out and bigger titles coming out.
If you already own a PS3 and HDTV will improve your gaming experience

Really pointless to get a ps3 and not have a HDTV. Ps3 graphics at 480i look horrible. Not to mention, you cant play blu ray without at least 1080i I believe.

No, I use my ps3 with a $99 20" Walmart TV. It still looks great due to the power of the system itself.

You don't have to, you can just play it on an ordinary TV, but it you play it on HDTV things will look alot prettier.

If you want the BEST experience, then yes. If you want to PLAY it, then no.
The PS3 DOES NOT have a built in HD-DVD player. It has a built in BLU-RAY. They are two different formats. Sony doesn't support HD-DVD. That is being made by Toshiba I believe.
