Or, was the veneer of democratic institutions and civil rights for Americans and respect for other nations simply a lie from the start for the USA?

Without a clear enemy in the world, in order to justify its costly aggression and need for a military economy to employ the fighters and generate the technologies.... the USA invented one.

Lets see, during the Soviet era the US of A wasn't exactly a model world citizen either and its domestic record was also rather poor.

Islamic terrorism has been a long growing threat, clearly seen
since the 1970s. The majority of Muslims are wonderful, kind, generous peace loving types. But as the saying goes, beware the anger of a patient man.

But maybe you are thinking more about Iraq. I personally believe that this is more about competition between the beauracratic Europeans and the free wheeling Yanks.

Some Americans believe that to fix the problems in the world is simply a matter of dropping a few smart bombs through their roof. While the EU and UN takes the approach that if a politely worded letter doesn't work, a stern warning followed by a harsly worded letter will do the trick.

While the EU/UN approach obviously doesn't work, bombing the **** out of people also seems to non-productive. Iraq being the experiment that proves it.

oh come on!! The U.S.A. is not an enemy-state! The policy of peace through strength is not new. As Ronald Reagan said, "If we look to the answer as to why for so many years we achieved SO much, prospered as no other people on earth, it was because here in this land we unleashed the energy and individual genius of man to a greater extent that has ever been done before. Freedom and dignity of the individual have been more available and assured here than in any other place on earth."

I ask you... Why do you see the desire of our government to help other governments have freedom and dignity of the individual--as aggression?

Take off your rose-colored glasses. Our world filled with terrorist who want to demolish our government is a reality.

You seem to have already decided the answer to this question by the way you phrased it... The USA's "abuses" began shortly after (some would say during) WWII. America is just making damn sure that when and if all hell breaks loose we have the capacity to dominate the rest of the world militarily... and yes it drives our economy to a certain extent... why do you think so many people want to live here?

You are begging the question. Please try to use facts and logic next time. Thank you for playing "I am a closed minded socialist that hates freedom".
