How do I set mt external hard drive to default?

So long as your PC's BIOS has the option to set a USB or Firewire device as a boot option all you need to do is enter the BIOS setup & choose it as the primary boot device.

if your bios allows booting from usb device then you can set your primary boot device as external hdd
