This is (1 + sqrt5)/2 which is approximately 1.618. It crops up in many ways in nature, architecture and other fields. One common application is to do with the Fibonacci sequence . This is 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 35, etc. If you take the ratio of each term to the previous one then this works towards the golden ratio as a limit. In fact the terms of the Fibonacci sequence can be given as a formula involving the golden ratio.
