The most common cause of CEL on GM cars is a clogged EGR port. It does not cause any running problems, just a light.

There are a number of sensors throughout the engine & trans.
If one or more are not comunicating with the computer, the computer in turn send a signal to the "Check Engine" light.

most common is the oxygen sensor going bad, but changing the O2 sensor may not fix it because the spark plug may not be burning all the fuel causing your O2 sensor to read bad, or your injector is not spraying correctly. take it to Autozone they'll test it for free. best bet is to do a basic tune-up.
