Is there any freely downloadable software that lets one play MP3 music through the computer's internal, i.e., built-in speaker? I'm using Windows XP Pro - SP2.

I did a bit of assembly coding for the PC's built-in speaker a long time ago and if memory serves that speaker is simply tied to a TTL output. That means you can only send an on/off signal to the speaker, which means that for all intents and purposes it has essentially no dynamic range or control of timbre and those little beeps you make are pretty much the limit of what that speaker can do. Besides it's usually a small, cheap low-quality speaker that's placed for cheap installation and the acoustics are generally lousy. What audio can be gotten out of something like that beyond those beeps may be done by PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), which if you can remember old Apple ][ or PC games from the early 1980's and the weak, tinny sounds they made that's what you should expect to hear.

I haven't heard of any genuine audio drivers being built for that speaker, so I doubt anyone's written anything like an MP3 player to play for that, though I could be wrong.

No. You can only hear an mp3 sound when a speaker is plugged.
