Because in the absence of a rival superpower they have hegemony. Also they are taught that way at school and in their films so they (the average person) end up knowing nothing about the world outside. Because they have a sphere of influence in some backward countries, they assume the whole world is like that.

I have been to a few countries and loved each one of them because they where not like America. they all had something special about them and i enjoyed myself greatly. However i would rather not live in any other country besides the US. I love it here. Do i think we are better than everybody else? No!! As for you question about why so many "yanks" are on the UK/Ireland answers. FYI my Grandfather came here from Galway Ireland. I wont stop going to Ireland answers simply because you find it so annoying. I go there because i plan on visiting for the first time and i want to know about Ireland as much as i can. BTW i do not consider myself a yank, but as an American. If you do not like Americans on there, well thats tough titty. Maybe if you would stop sticking your nose in the air you would not be a snotty snit. why would you have a problem with people being proud of the US? Just because we are proud, does not mean we think we are better.

1 - They are the only superpower (at the moment) so since they see no competition, they assume that the world is following their model.
2 - As a history fanatic myself, I can say that the history lessons in grade school are really crap. Very, very little emphasis is given in history outside of North America, so most Americans grow up thinking civilization started in 1776
3 - They share borders with a developing country to the south and receive a lot of illegal immigrants from there. It's relatively easy for immigrants to cross the border; while most Americans dislike this, at the same time this makes them a little smug and reinforces their belief that everyone is desperate to be like them. But in reality, illegal immigration is a world wide problem -- Spain apprehends Africans off their coast everyday, Haitians cross the Dominican border constantly, and Japan has issues with Chinese & Brazilians overstaying their visas.
4 - Most importantly, the media. Americans are avid TV and movie goers. There are countless American-made movies and TV shows, with colorful characters and very little scenes taking place outside the U.S. Additionally, when there are scenes overseas, the non-Americans are usually dangerous. This has given many Americans the impression that the U.S. is where all the good/strong/"cool" people are.
Media is a powerful tool.

I think your wrong, not everybody in the USA wants you or anyone to be like the USA. If you hear this I think what your misunderstanding, is that we in the USA want your country's to be happy, live in peace, not have to wake up to war. If you think that is a bad idea then, I'm so sorry you feel that way. Personally, I am tired of all the sentiments against the USA, you don't understand the way we are, you are generalizing, when I think of the UK, I still think of it as being poverty stricken, and you not being able to own things, but I do know this has changed, how because I know 5 people from the UK, here in the USA. Americans in general want all other country's to be capable of managing their own, with out us having to interfere, or to be asked to interfere. Do you think we enjoy giving birth to our children and sending them off to die in some foreign country's over religious and civil wars? I suppose you think we do that just because we want you all to be like us?

You are confused I want to be just like you and I am from the USA and don't think that I would try to make you jealous unless I stole your boyfriend. He! He!
And yes I'm on the UK/Ireland Answers section after all it is the WORLD WIDE WEB! You should thank your lucky stars that you are not restricted to just a site in your country. This gives you a wide range of point of views of all the people in a diversified World which I would call Freedom. By the way after all don't I have to right to answer on this site as I am of Irish descent. Thanks for your point of view.

Well, I'm your average American citizen (Yank). My people (ancestors) have been here for hundreds of years, and the thought you've fore mentioned never crosses my mind.
Why are there so many Yanks on the UK?Ireland Answers? Because, many Yanks, as you put it, have roots and ties from there.

This may not be true because we often see what is in our minds not what really is. Americans are the people who are excessively proud of their country and that is something good. However when other people don't have the same feeling towards their own countries, they feel inferior to an American person who never speaks of his/her love for America to others; however anyone can detect it from the way they speak. And when others think of an American, they associate him/her with his/her government. In this way others turn to be prejudiced against American individuals. Americans in fact are simple, tolerant, helpful people. See what happens when other people in othe parts of the world are in trouble. American people are the first to help. By the way I am not American, yet Americans have taught me how to be proud of my own country.

To answer your first question, yes - you are generalizing. Not every American thinks that. To answer your second question, some questions/categories appear on the Answers board for multiple countries. Most Americans are signed in through the US Answers page.

Your statement is very general. Americans that are ignorant regarding the rest of the world think things like that. I personally have considered moving to England as I still have family there and its where my mother was raised.
As for your second question, I can't answer because I'm not there.

I have traveled to many different countries in my life and the saying is true that most people think USA is the greatest country on the globe. because a poor man willing to work can make himself from a nobody to a CEO of a company..this country is the place of opportunities.. only people who lack ambition will never achieve success in some form. or people who want a handout will fail too. all others have the opportunity to achieve anything they desire here. othre countries have no helping hands programs tht amount to much. very little education opportunity and the governments hold people back where our form of govt. lifts us all up regardlessof color.origin.or creed.. this si the land of opportunity and most people from all over wish for thei opprtunity
